The Minority Community Investment Coalition (MCIC) is dedicated to strengthening and empowering minority communities through strategic investment, collaboration, and opportunity. By supporting initiatives that promote economic development, education, entrepreneurship, and community well-being, MCIC works to create lasting, equitable impact for current and future generations. Through partnerships with local organizations, leaders, and residents, the coalition invests in solutions that help build stronger neighborhoods and expand opportunities for all.
HELPING ERIE GROW, THRIVE, AND SHINE
In order to build equity while alleviating the impact of poverty for Erie residents, each project is carefully selected to make a significant impact on all community members. Neighborhood development accomplishments include:
- 20 home improvement projects completed
- 8 home improvement grants awarded
- 3 murals installed
- 15 vacant lots acquired
COVID-19 RESPONSE
During the COVID pandemic, MCIC acted swiftly with healthcare initiatives targeting people and neighborhoods with the greatest needs. During the height of the pandemic, MCIC coordinate with the Erie County Health Department, UPMC, AHN, and LECOM to serve the needs of our respective communities. Since Spring of 2020 when the pandemic started MCIC has provided:
- 19,578 Emergency Meals
- 6,065 Meal Boxes
- 57,407 Health Screenings
- 15,474 Covid Tests
- 6,453 Covid Vaccinations at our clinics
MCIC is committed to supporting the health and wellness of underserved Erie residents. MCIC began this work during COVID when it acted swiftly with healthcare initiatives targeting people and neighborhoods with the greatest needs.
HEALTH DISPARITIES
- Stroke prevalence was higher among non-Hispanic Black population at 16% compared to non-Hispanic White population at 5%.
- The percentage of heart attacks was higher among non-Hispanic Black population at 11% compared to non-Hispanic White population at 7%.
- Prediabetes and diabetes prevalence was higher among non-Hispanic Black population at 33% compared to non-Hispanic White population at 21%.
- Death rate of breast cancer is 1.8 times higher in Black women compared to White women.
- Death rate of diabetes is 1.8 times higher in the Black population compared to White population.
- Infant mortality rate is 3.6 times higher in the Black population compared to White population.
With proven outcomes and a full team of doctors and professionals, MCIC’s work moves beyond COVID, engaging with partners to develop a long-term health plan targeting those people and neighborhoods with the greatest needs. Understanding that representation matters, the team consists of BIPOC individuals working to improve health equity.
