Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science

Thank you for your interest in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science for Region 10.

Region 10 PJAS is currently active in Erie, Crawford, and Warren counties. It can also include the counties of Forest, McKean, Elk, Potter, and Cameron.

Students in grades 7-12 design, conduct, and report on an experiment in an area of their personal interest in any STEM field. Their participation mimics research and thesis presentations real scientists conduct in their progression to Masters and PhD status. In fact, many of our students continue to do just that.

PJAS HISTORY
The Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) is a statewide organization of junior and senior high school students designed to stimulate and promote interest in science among its members through the development of research projects and investigations.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is divided into 12 PJAS regions. Each PJAS region consists of two or more counties. Every PJAS region has one or more directors and a treasurer who oversee the operation of the region.

PJAS also has a State Director, a State Secretary, and  two State Treasurers as well as committees for Judging, Safety, Technicians, and Awards.

PJAS GOALS
PJAS is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Academy of Science, as an Affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, it is organized with the following objectives:

• to promote greater participation in science and mathematics activities among the youth of Pennsylvania;

• to improve the quality of achievement in mathematics and science by encouraging students to participate in research and develop original ideas;

• to develop an understanding of the scientific community through close association with leaders in the sciences;

• to see improvement of science clubs and activities through the cooperative regional and state meetings;

• to inculcate among its members true scientific attitudes and humanistic ideals that shall lead to greater development of service to man. 

YOUR SUPPORT: What your support provides for our students.

• Consumable as well as sustainable supplies for students’ independent experiments.
• Registration and participation fees for our Regional Meet in Jan-Feb (usually held at Penn State Behrend) as well as the State meet at Penn State, University Park in May. Group transportation to the state meet has been one of our more challenging budget items.
• Special Awards to recognize especially outstanding and/innovative student projects.

Your dedication, curiosity, and hard work were on full display as you presented thoughtful, well-researched projects and represented our region with pride. Whether it was your first time attending states or your final year in the program, your passion for science, technology, and innovation was truly inspiring.
