Who We Are
Our story begins with an educator's unwavering belief- that every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and belong. In 1952, our founder, Dr. Gertrude A. Barber, opened a small school for children with intellectual disabilities, a bold act of love at a time when few believed in their potential. What started as a single classroom has grown into a statewide organization serving thousands of children and adults with intellectual disabilities, autism, and behavioral health challenges - and the families who support them.
At the heart of our work is a promise that those served are never alone; if their needs extend beyond our programs, we help them make the right connection.
What makes us different is our roots. We remain a family-led organization, guided by second and third generations who carry forward Dr. Barber's vision.
We meet individuals where they are, walking alongside them with compassion, expertise, and care that is deeply personal. We build relationships, grounded in trust and inspired by faith, hope, and love, that last a lifetime.
We are guided by compassion, innovation, and an unshakeable belief in human potential. We work every day to help make dreams come true for people of all abilities. We have grown from a single classroom into a comprehensive network of services for 5,400 adults and children in Bedford, Erie, Pittsburgh, Somerset, and Warren. We empower those served through education, residential options, employment, and community programs. We carry forward Dr. Baber's legacy and vision of a world where everyone belongs and lives to their fullest potential.
