Preserving One of Erie's Architectural Treasures

Long before it became home to the Erie Club, the Reed Mansion was built in 1848 for General Charles Manning Reed, one of Erie’s most influential citizens and the son of Rufus Seth Reed, among the region’s earliest settlers. Perched along West Sixth Street at the edge of what became Millionaires’ Row, the stately Greek Revival home, with its iconic columns, intricate woodwork, and welcoming goddesses, stood as a symbol of Erie’s prosperity and ambition.

As the Mansion celebrated its 100th year as the Erie Club, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, nearly 180 years after its construction, preserving this landmark remains an ongoing responsibility.

Through the Reed Mansion Preservation Fund, a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are committed to safeguarding one of Erie’s oldest surviving mansions for generations to come. Your support through Erie Gives helps preserve more than a clubhouse. It protects a tangible connection to Erie’s earliest days, the prosperity and promise of the nineteenth century, and the stories of the people who helped shape our city. Long before these walls became a place of camaraderie and celebration, they stood as a testament to Erie’s growth, ambition, and enduring spirit.

With your help, this piece of Erie’s history will continue to inspire and tell the story of our community for generations to come.
