Union City Public Library

A nonprofit organization

The Union City Library has been a part of the Union City community since 1879. It started small, a single bookcase in the corner of Drs. Sherwood and Burnam's office, with donated books from the public. Patrons originally paid an annual fee of $1.50 to use this small library. By 1882 the library had circulated 800 book and 70% of them were new additions to the collection. Over the years the library grew and was moved to several locations due to fires and space challenges. In 1908 the Library acquired its Articles of Incorporation. In 1931 the library moved to the Wellman house at the corner of South Main and Stranahan Streets where it remained until fall of 2000. A new building was built and was opened in 2004. As of December 2025 the library housed 30,390 items. Patrons no longer pay an annual fee but they do still donate generously to assist the library with its operations.

Last year the library circulated 14,073 physical items and another 4,447 digital items. The featured 147 programs in 2025 with plans for more programs this year. Besides programs and items patrons have the opportunity to use computers, print and fax paperwork, or play in our play room! The library today is more than just books. There are objects and kits you can check out, hotspots for internet and access to multiple databases spanning everything from car repair manuals to learning languages.

Stop in today to get a library and experience the world from the comfort of home!
