Founded in 1869, the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf (WPSD) is a non-profit, tuition-free school, located near Pittsburgh, PA. The school provides academic, athletic and extracurricular programs to deaf and hard-of-hearing children from birth through grade 12.
In addition to the Edgewood, PA-located k-12 grade school, WPSD’s affiliated programs include the statewide early intervention program - Choices for Children, The Scranton School for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children, serving students k-8th grade in northeast PA , The Children’s Center of Edinboro at PennWest and the The Children’s Center of Central PA (Hershey, PA). Consequently, WPSD is the largest comprehensive center for deaf education in Pennsylvania.
WPSD established The Children’s Center at PennWest/Edinboro in 2018 as a collaborative partnership with then Edinboro University to provide an academic experience geared toward the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children, ages 3 - 5. The pre-school is located on the university’s campus in Butterfield Hall and operates in conjunction with the Education department. In addition to the preschool at Edinboro, WPSD is active in Erie County by strengthening relationships with school districts and community agencies, expanding family engagement opportunities, and offering American Sign Language to the community.
