The mission of Preservation Erie is to promote, preserve, and enhance the distinctive character of greater Erie through community-based planning, design, and historic preservation.
Within the last 10 years, the organization has:
- annually hosted the Greater Erie Awards;
- led tours of all kinds in historic neighborhoods, barns, downtowns, and other places of interest;
- overseen the Erie County Historic Resource Inventory, which collected data on 31,000+ historic resources;
- partnered with Erie County Department of Planning to create the Cultural Heritage Plan, which focuses on ensuring that the assets targeted for preservation in Erie County are being considered equitably and with an eye to the future;
- assisted with the National Register nominations for the Lawrence Park Historic District, Corry Historic District, and Girard Historic District;
- worked hand-in-hand with Waterford Borough, Union City Borough, and Girard Borough to develop and implement façade improvement grant programs;
- helped Union City Borough secure funds to develop a historic preservation plan and design guidelines for their downtown; and
- worked with the City of Erie to achieve Certified Local Government designation and build a historic preservation program.
